death
It is with immense sadness that we must share with you the news of the loss of our friend, our leader, and our mentor, Kris Nóva.
It was Nóva who inspired us to come together to build Hachyderm, whose vision created Nivenly, and whose mission we continue to carry forward. In her working life beyond Nivenly, she has left behind a legacy of professionalism and strength of vision, and we all miss her terribly.

hoooooly shit the new version of serde_derive includes a pre-built executable and has no official way to turn that off? Wtaf.
Alt text isn’t only used by screen reader users!
It also helps ND folk who need a bit more understanding of the image, and partially sighted folk, and folk who have colour vision deficiencies. It also helps if you’ve got crap bandwidth and the images won’t load, or the link broke, or you turn images off entirely etc.
Found this insane way of showing your screen refresh rate with only CSS, by @luna: https://cohost.org/lunasorcery/post/2465593-testing-your-animati
Really like the creativity there.
This led me to the following:
- video below: by changing the refresh rate manually (here in macOS settings), we see that browsers (Chromium) takes a couple of seconds to adapt its “internal” framerate to the new refresh rate;
- while on it, I did some requestAnimationFrame tick rate tests, and it’s… a mess: https://mehdi.cc/tests/raf-tickrate/
I'd been wondering why I'd heard so little from Naomi Wu lately, and the reason is unhappily worse than Twitter breaking API based post mirroring to Mastodon.
(TL;DR, she's been silenced by the authorities.)
Worth reading in full, as the end includes a brief interview and suggests that her earlier highlighting of the security risks of compromised keyboards to E2E encrypted messaging turned out to be potentially relevant.
