i rlly wish mastodon went more in the tumblr vibes direction of "we gave up on trying to attract new users so now its just a cursed wacky website with some comfy communities" rather than "we must make an exact clone of twitter and make every twitter user switch over"

thoughts about trending content and user retention

i understand user retention being a useful metric like “are we doing things right”, and low user retention can be a sign the onboarding is confusing or the software a pain to use

but at the same time, i feel like it's ok for users to try out Mastodon and figure out that this kind of social network is actually not what they were looking for

similarly, i understand trending hashtags and posts (sorry i still don't understand trending articles) can be useful to discover content and users who may interest you, but… are you doing that to help people find what they were initially searching for, or to constantly give them something new to engage with? also, trending stuff likely worsens the “popularity contest” side of things and requires proactive moderation

"In a groundbreaking decision, the Austrian Data Protection Authority ("Datenschutzbehörde" or "DSB") has decided on a model case by noyb that the continuous use of Google Analytics violates the GDPR."

"This is a very detailed and sound decision. The bottom line is: Companies can't use US cloud services in Europe anymore."

After Mozilla recently began accepting donations via BitPay, many people started being vocal about cancelling Mozilla and Firefox and switching to other browsers.

I know crypto sucks, but don't y'all realize that the other browser engines are developed by megacorps that are LEAGUES ahead in terms of ecologic impact, and that are almost entirely built on top of evil business models?

Mozilla's only sin was accepting donations via BitPay. Please let's stop being so toxic about everything, and boycott BitPay and Bitcoin rather than Mozilla, shall we?

I honestly don't really care how "unreliable" you think shared libraries are, using entirely static linking is how we get gigantic 500MB monoliths that waste disk space and RAM, don't integrate with the rest of the system properly due to mismatched library versions, and also don't get security patches from the system unless you manually update the binary itself.

Static linking may be "easier", but as programmers, it's our job to use the *right* solution, not just the easiest one.

J'ai appelé la machine à café Fillon parce qu'elle ne rendait pas la monnaie (alors que c'est marqué qu'elle doit) mais ça n'a pas amusé mes collègues 😓

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as REST, is in fact, HTTP+JSON, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, REST minus HATEOS. HTTP+JSON is not a REST API unto itself, but rather another component of a fully functioning REST API made useful by the hyperlinks, schema-lessness and generic system components comprising a full REST API as defined by Roy Fielding's thesis.

Python 3 is not Turing-complete because it can't do this:

True = lambda f, g: f
False = lambda f, g: g

…I’m seeing people say “just don’t use an iPhone.” It’s not that simple when everyday things like financial apps with two-factor authentication are locked into the two main platforms.

We need legislation to ensure critical services use open standards so you can use your Pinephone to buy lunch in the future.

It’s shocking how easily some folks jump to “just go live in a cave.” No, that’s not an acceptable alternative. We deserve to partake in modern life without sacrificing our human rights…

Imagine a government agency ordered Apple to include hashes of all documents they wanted to track into that kiddie porn database. Suddenly the government knows who's got that antivax meme JPG. Or tax protest DOC. Or an environmental report PDF.

And it's just hashes! Apple won't know what they're tracking, so they can't say "no".

Now tell me you honestly believe no government *ever* will take advantage of this invisible monitoring power.

masto meta / discourse / sarcasm

How Gargron seems to view the average (potential) Mastodon user in the last couple of years:

* too dumb to understand columns, that's an "advanced web interface"
* offended by the word "toot"
* too dumb to understand what a server is
* too dumb to understand local and federated timelines

Mastodon should probably remove CWs too, that's a really confusing feature since Twitter doesn't have it.
After all, the only important metric is how many new users it has.
